Innovating Community Mental Health in Rural and Remote Areas

14–15 May 2026 | Zamora, Spain – A EUCOMS Network Seminar

EUCOMS Network is delighted to invite you to the EUCOMS Network Seminar 2026, taking place on 14–15 May 2026 in the historic city of Zamora, Spain.

This seminar is organized by EUCOMS Network, in collaboration with the University of Salamanca and the Portuguese National Mental Health Coordination.

Under the theme “Recovery for All – Innovation in Community Mental Health in Rural and Remote Areas,” this two-day seminar will explore an important question: how can we ensure that people living outside major cities have access to meaningful, recovery-oriented mental health care?

The event is developed with the support and partnership of several regional and European institutions, including Junta de Castilla y LeónSACYL – Castilla y León Health ServiceUnidade Local de Saúde do Nordeste (Portugal), the Interreg España–Portugal Programme, the EQUISAM project, and the Portuguese National Coordination of Mental Health Policies.

Held on the Salamanca University campus in Zamora, the seminar will bring together professionals, researchers, service providers, policymakers, and people with lived experience from across Europe. Together, we will exchange experiences, explore innovative models of care, and reflect on how community mental health services can better respond to the realities of rural and remote regions.

The programme is designed to be both inspiring and practical. Alongside international speakers, participants will take part in interactive workshops, open discussions, and site visits that showcase community mental health services in the Zamora region.

A particularly important aspect of this seminar will be the participation of mental health nurses from different countries, who will come together in dedicated sessions designed specifically for nurses. These sessions will create a space for exchange, allowing participants to share experiences from their daily practice, learn from each other, and develop new ideas for strengthening community mental health care.

Throughout the seminar we will explore topics such as:

  • Recovery-oriented mental health care in rural communities
  • Innovative community-based service models
  • The role of nursing and multidisciplinary teams
  • Architecture and environments that support recovery
  • Transcultural approaches and inclusion in mental health care

Participants will also have the opportunity to visit local mental health services, offering a real glimpse into how community care can be organised and delivered outside major urban centres.

Above all, this seminar is meant to be a space for dialogue and exchange, where colleagues from different countries and backgrounds can learn from each other and reflect together on how to make mental health care more accessible for everyone, everywhere.
